Turkey warned of possible discriminatory attacks in Europe and the United States

Turkey warned its citizens of possible discriminatory attacks in Europe and the United States after a series of Islamophobic incidents and after Sweden, Norway and Denmark issued warnings to their citizens to avoid large gatherings in Turkey.

"Citizens living or traveling in Europe or the United States should be careful and avoid areas with large demonstrations," the Turkish Foreign Ministry said.

"Recent Islamophobic and racist acts against Turkey, carried out by groups linked to terrorist organizations, have shown a dangerous level of religious intolerance and hatred in Europe," the statement added.

The warnings were issued shortly after the foreign ministries of Sweden, Norway and Denmark warned their citizens to avoid large gatherings in Turkey due to recent tensions.

Tensions between Turkey and some European countries, including Sweden, which wants to become a member of the NATO alliance, have risen recently over protests that Ankara considers Islamophobic or anti-Turkish.
