Serbian farmers do not know what to do with the surplus wheat
The farmers of Stig asked in the conversation with the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of Serbia, Jelena Tanaskovic, to find a buyer for more than one million tons of wheat and to increase subsidies, said agricultural producer Nedeljko Savic. After the farmers' conversation with Tanaskovic, she asked them to wait until April 4.
"Tanaskovic said that he is in contact with the ambassador of China in Serbia, with whom they are discussing the export of a million tons of wheat to that country and that we should wait until April 4," said Savic, reports Politika rs.
He added that agricultural producers will wait for an answer and that they will postpone the protest that was announced for Thursday. In March of last year, at the suggestion of President Aleksandar Vucic, the Government banned the export of wheat despite experts' warnings that it was unnecessary because there was enough for domestic needs and export.
Two months later, limited exports were allowed, in quotas of 220.000 tons per month, but the demand and the price began to fall, and in the last month, a kilogram on the stock market costs about 23,20 dinars without value added tax.
Savic said that this surplus of wheat is now creating a huge problem for farmers because not only have they not sold it, but also because the harvest is in three months and they have nowhere to store the new crop.
