Russia will prevent any foreign interference in the upcoming elections, the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, said today.
"Any interference in the internal affairs of Russia will be prevented and suppressed, in accordance with Russian laws. We will protect the freedom of our people, their sovereignty and the right to choose their future. The people and only the people of Russia are the only source of power in our country," Putin said at a meeting with party leaders in the Lower House of the State Duma.
He added that the pre-election campaign should be competitive, and the elections should be conducted in a transparent and legitimate manner with respect for democratic procedures.
