One person was seriously wounded at a hospital in the US state of Virginia when a man who came for a psychiatric evaluation opened fire.

Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards told reporters that the call to police came in around 04:00 a.m. local time when shots were fired at Chippenham Hospital, the AP reported.

Officers who arrived at the hospital found a man with serious gunshot wounds, but his life was not in danger.

Edwards revealed that a police officer from nearby Chesterfield, who happened to be at the hospital, returned fire during the incident, but that the suspect was not injured.

The suspect, a 27-year-old Glen Allen man, surrendered and was taken into custody. The motive for the shooting is currently unknown.
