Questions about history textbooks in Macedonia and Bulgaria, based on the comments exchanged, were discussed at the 23rd meeting of the mixed historical commission, which took place in the past two days.

- The members of the Commission exchanged ideas and arguments on how to improve history textbooks and exchanged several proposals-recommendations that remain the basis for further discussions - the Macedonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed.

From there, they indicate that the next regular meeting of the Commission will be held on March 30 and 31 of this year.

The last meeting of the commission was on November 17 and 18, also in Sofia. The main topic was the role and place of the Ohrid archdiocese and the way it is presented in the textbooks for the seventh grade in Macedonia.

The co-president from the Macedonian part of the commission Dear Gjorgiev, then stated that there was a positive and constructive atmosphere at the meeting, but no agreement was reached due to misunderstandings about sources and different interpretations of the past.

Last week, Gjorgiev assessed that the latest developments in Macedonian-Bulgarian relations also affect her work. He says that there is a tendency for relations between Skopje and Sofia to be cyclically attacked at certain periods in order to disrupt some short continuity of a peaceful period.

- We cannot remain immune to what is happening in society and all those political upheavals, tensions, misunderstandings, daily political fights, which occur cyclically in Macedonian-Bulgarian relations, and they undoubtedly affect the work of the commission. Almost regularly in all those fights and political statements that are made, the commission is mentioned, history is mentioned, the topics on which the Commission itself is working are mentioned, and all this affects the atmosphere in the commission itself - said Gjorgiev.

According to him, there is a tendency to disrupt the continuity of the peaceful periods in Macedonian-Bulgarian relations. Regarding whether it is possible to reach a solution for Gotse Delchev and other disputed issues, he believes that in the current conditions of cold relations, with very high tension, it is very difficult for the commission to work calmly and peacefully.
