Significant drop in pesticide sales in the EU

The EU Statistics Office states that in 2022, around 322.000 tons of pesticides were sold, which is 10 percent less than the amount sold a year earlier.

There has been a dramatic drop in the amount of pesticides sold in the EU, mostly because their prices have increased, Eurostat reports, writes Politika.

The EU Statistics Office states that in 2022, around 322.000 tons of pesticides were sold, which is 10 percent less than the amount sold a year earlier. Of the many pesticides used in the EU, fungicides and bactericides had the largest sales volume with 43 percent of sales in 2022, followed by herbicides (35 percent), then insecticides and acaricides used against mites and ticks (14 percent) . Of the EU countries, the largest share of sold pesticides is registered in France (21 percent), Spain (18), Germany (15) and Italy (14), and these countries are also the leading agricultural producers in the EU. There were also several EU countries that saw a large decline in pesticide sales between 2011 and 2022, such as Italy (37 percent), Portugal (36) and Greece (33), according to Eurostat.

Despite such data, it was reported in May last year that European agriculture still relies on large amounts of pesticides for crop yields and that chemical sales have remained virtually flat over the past decade.

Pesticides are used in forestry, in the construction of roads, railways, in gardens, public parks... However, at the end of last year the European Parliament rejected a plan to reduce the use of chemical pesticides by 50 percent by 2030.
