A woman in India "for punishment" was forced to take off her clothes and was forced to walk around the village naked because she returned to her husband after an alleged relationship with another man for several months, local authorities and media reported today.

The woman was rescued by police in the Alipurduar district of West Bengal after videos surfaced on social media on Sunday.

"We have arrested three main suspects and are investigating the incident. There will probably be more arrests soon"Said local police chief Bolanat Pandey.

The incident took place in Kumargram assembly constituency of Alipurduar district where a woman was stripped naked and taken to the streets. The police have not arrested any criminals so far. She was allegedly dragged out of the house and beaten

According to "Telegraf.rs", the 35-year-old woman left the village six months earlier, allegedly with her lover. When she returned to her husband's home on Thursday, some villagers questioned her about her whereabouts, after which they set up a makeshift court to decide her fate.

Ruling party politicians called the incident "barbaric". Namely, the woman is still in shock and is in hospital under strong medical supervision.

In Indian villages and tribal areas, it is not uncommon for a woman considered to be a sorceress or having extramarital affairs to be punished by being forced to undress and walk naked.

Some women are humiliated for other reasons, due to unpaid loans or children with partners from other castes.
