South Korean President Yun Seok-yeol ordered the army to respond "swiftly and forcefully" in the event of any North Korean provocation.

Yun issued the order at a time when it is assumed that Pyongyang may conduct a new, seventh nuclear test after five years. The order also came a day after US Air Force F-35A jets arrived in South Korea.

Last week, Yun met with US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Madrid, where they agreed to work together to advance ways to "broadly deter" North Korea.

North Korea has stepped up missile tests this year and is believed to be preparing for a seventh nuclear test
