Czech President Milos Zeman today criticized the global fight against climate change, calling it exaggerated and saying that the debate on climate change is becoming a kind of "new religion".

- The debate on climate change is becoming a new religion. "So let me be straightforward," Zeman, 75, said during his traditional Christmas televised address.

Zeman, who was prime minister of the Czech Republic from 1998 to 2002 and a former leader of the Social Democratic Party, warned that Europe must be vigilant with environmental measures, as it risks becoming economically weaker than other continents.

"Theoretically, it could happen that the industry moves to where energy is cheaper and the EU becomes an environmental museum with a lower standard of living for its inhabitants," Zeman added in his speech.
