The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenski announced today that he visited the Kherson region, where thousands of people are dealing with the consequences of the floods after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam.

Zelensky shared a video of his meeting with officials on Telegram and said they discussed evacuation, restoration of the ecosystem in the region and the military situation in the area. It followed his Wednesday night address, in which he called for a "clear and swift response from the world."

He said a "large-scale effort" was needed, including help from groups such as the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said earlier Wednesday that it was coordinating closely with the Ukrainian Red Cross to support the humanitarian response to the destruction of the dam.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg "promises that NATO mechanisms will be used to provide humanitarian aid. Kuleba and Stoltenberg announced that they will hold a meeting with NATO allies on Thursday to discuss the situation.

The governor of the Kherson region said on Thursday that about 600 square kilometers are under water.

Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said about two-thirds of the flooded land is on the Russian-occupied side of the Dnieper River, while one-third is on the side still under Ukrainian control.

Prokudin said that efforts to evacuate people from flooded areas are ongoing.

The hydroelectric dam collapsed on Tuesday, with Russia and Ukraine blaming each other for the destruction.
