Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today invited US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping to join an upcoming peace summit as his country struggles to repel Russian attacks in the 27-month invasion.

Russian forces have advanced on the battlefield in recent weeks and stepped up airstrikes on cities, and Kiev hopes the June meeting in Switzerland will help increase international pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Zelensky said the summit "will show who in the world really wants to end the war."

"I appeal to the world leaders who are still on the sidelines of international efforts at the global peace summit – President Biden, the leader of the United States, and President Xi, the leader of China," he said. "Please show your leadership in promoting peace - real peace, not just lulls between attacks.

On the other hand, Russia said that it does not see any point in the conference to which Moscow is not currently invited.

Zelensky's call came two days after Russian sources told Reuters that Putin was ready to end the war in Ukraine with an agreed ceasefire that recognizes the current battle lines.

Zelensky and Ukrainian supporters say the ceasefire will only help Russia rearm and regroup.

Russia has made slow but steady progress along several parts of the eastern front in recent months and is trying to make a deeper push into the northeastern Kharkiv region after a ground offensive launched this month.

In an interview with Reuters last week, Zelenski considered that it is crucial that as many countries as possible come and sit at the negotiating table at the peace talks, which are to be held on June 15 and 16 near Lucerne.

Russian President Putin, on the other hand, believes that these talks can turn Ukrainian demands and Russian withdrawal into an ultimatum of the West to Russia.
