The ship left the Ukrainian port of Mariupol for the first time since Russia took over the city and headed east of Ukraine, the Russian-backed separatist leader of the Ukrainian breakaway region of Donetsk told Interfax. Reuters.

A port spokesman said last week that the ship would load 2.700 tonnes of metal in Mariupol before heading east to the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don.

Ukraine has said that a shipment of metal to Russia from Mariupol is tantamount to robbery.

Mariupol became the first major Ukrainian city that Russia claims to have taken over completely, after a long battle over the Azovstal plant.
