Letesenbet Gidey from Ethiopia set a world record in the women's half marathon on Sunday in Valencia with a time of 1:02:52.

Gidey (23), who is also the world record holder in the 5000m (14: 06.62) and 10.000m (29: 01.03), improved by more than a minute the old record (1:04:02) set this year by Kenya's Ruth Chepngetic .

- I am happy that I broke the world record in my first half marathon and in the first race for the NN Running team. "Thank you Valencia," said Gidey, a 10.000-meter bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics.

In the men's competition, the Kenyan Abel Kipchumba ran the fastest 21 kilometers in 58:07 minutes.

The second and third place were won by his compatriots Ronex Kipruto (58:09) and Daniel Mateiko (58:26).
