The leader of a well-known hacker group was arrested in Ukraine
In a joint operation by the police of Ukraine, France, Germany, Norway and the United States, the leader of a hacker group operating from Ukraine and responsible for cyber attacks whose aim was to extort hundreds of millions of euros from its victims was arrested, the European Police Service announced today ( Europol).
Police raided 30 properties in western and central Ukraine last night. During that operation, a 32-year-old man was arrested, who is suspected of being the leader of the gang, as well as four accomplices.
More than 20 investigators from France, Germany, Norway and the United States have been deployed to Kyiv to assist local police and judicial authorities.
"In an unprecedented effort, police and judicial authorities from seven countries have joined forces with Europol and Eurojustice to destroy and arrest key figures behind major hacking operations in Ukraine," the statement said.
That group of hackers attacked organizations in 71 countries, infecting about 250 servers that led to a financial loss of several hundred million euros.
"These hackers are known to specifically target large companies and disrupt their activities," Europol added in a statement.
