In Split, which has 160.000 inhabitants, according to traffic police data, over 88.000 motor vehicles are registered. Of these, there are more than 70.000 cars, and according to the city administration, as many as 20.000 parking spaces are missing, Hina agency reports.

But the City Department for Traffic and Communal Maintenance of the City of Split did not determine "accurate measurement data" for the last 12 years, and the last ones were from 2010. At that time, 15.000 parking spaces were missing, and in the last ten years, the number of vehicles in Split has increased by at least 10.000.

Thus, it is estimated that there is now a shortage of 18-20.000 parking spaces in that city, and this calculation does not take into account the small private parking lots that alleviate the problem somewhat. The city administration announces that the construction of two garages will soon begin, for which the City Council recently approved a loan of 60 million kunas (eight million euros), and will also finance the improvement of several streets.

Parking lots and garages in Split are managed by the city company "Split Parking", which has a total of 3.736 parking spaces in 20 garages and 4.221 spaces in 68 street parking lots. The greatest demand for parking spaces is in the wider city center, especially in the evenings during the tourist season. Along with the renovation of the garages, a public bicycle system was introduced with almost 42.000 users.

According to "Split Parking", there are 30.000 legal parking spaces in the city, but this is not enough if you consider how many cars the city has and how many come from the surrounding cities and how many tourists there are in the summer.
