Covid-19 vaccines approved for young children in the United States
US health officials have recommended that Covid-19 be given to children aged six months to five years, the last age group for which the vaccine has not yet been approved.
"We know that millions of parents and carers are waiting for their children to be vaccinated, and with today's decision he will be able to do so," said Dr Rochelle Valensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The CDC advisory body emphasized that vaccines protect young children from hospitalization, death and possible long-term complications.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves vaccines and the CDC decides who can get them.
The US government is preparing to start giving vaccines to young children early next week, and millions of doses have been ordered for distribution to doctors, hospitals and health clinics across the country.
