Ukrainian authorities announced today that in the past 24 hours, nine people died in fires trying to heat their homes.

The official announcement states that the number of fires is increasing because, due to regular interruptions in the supply of electricity, Ukrainians are increasingly resorting to the use of generators, candles and gas cylinders in their homes, reports the British media.

"Only in the last 24 hours, 131 fires were registered in Ukraine, of which 106 were in residential buildings. Nine people lost their lives and eight were injured. "Fires have become more frequent due to violations of fire safety rules in residential buildings and the use of non-certified devices for heating and food preparation," the Ukrainian authorities said in a statement.

The authorities appeal to citizens to be more careful in their homes and to explain to children about the dangers of fire.
