Six children and three adults were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a house in the town of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, Palestinian authorities said today.

Rafah, near the border with Egypt, is home to more than half of Gaza's 2,3 million residents, who have fled there due to ongoing fighting in the north of the Palestinian enclave.

Despite calls for restraint from around the world, including from the United States, the Israeli government has for weeks announced a ground offensive on Rafah, where it claims many fighters from the Palestinian Hamas movement, against which Israel has been waging a war since October, are hiding.
