About two million people are being evacuated from the coastal cities of Miyazaki, Kagoshima and Amakusa ahead of the onslaught of Super Typhoon Nanmadol.

Typhoon Nanmadol hit Kyushu today, the southernmost of Japan's four main islands. Railway companies have canceled trains in the region, and around 950 retail establishments are temporarily closed.

Nanmadol is the 14th typhoon of the season and is classified as a super typhoon by the US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center.
