In Greece, the fine is 50 euros for unvaccinated over 60 years and 100 euros for each following month
As of today, the penalty for unvaccinated citizens over 60 years of age came into force in Greece, and every following month they will pay 100 euros if they do not receive the vaccine in the meantime.
About two-thirds of the 10,7 million people in Greece are currently fully vaccinated, well above the EU average of just over 70 per cent.
Mortality and daily hospitalization rates have risen due to the spread of the omicron strain, while pressure on intensive care units has eased slightly.
Health Minister Thanos Plevris said the fines would be collected through the tax administration and the money would be used to fund state hospitals.
"The age factor is important because of its impact on public health," Pleuris said.
Compulsory vaccination of health workers was introduced last year, and at the end of December for those over 60 years.
From February 1, adult vaccination certificates will be valid for seven months, unless the owner receives an additional vaccine.
According to government figures, about 41,5 percent of the 530.000 people over the age of 60 are fully vaccinated.
