Names of streets, squares and bridges are changed in Debar - the National Liberation War fighters and the Yugoslav names are deleted

The Government at the session held on the 14th of this month reviewed the request of the Municipality of Debar, with the Proposed List and gave consent to the list of names of streets, squares and other infrastructure facilities, Debar Mayor Hekuran Duka announced on his Facebook profile.

- The Government of the Republic of Northern Macedonia approved the Draft-list of street names in the city of Debar, submitted by the Municipality of Debar for approval. Finally we have reason to rejoice in this long-awaited and desired good news. Congratulations to all defenders and good luck. For example, 22 December Street will now be named after Joseph Bagheri, etc., wrote Duka, posting a copy of the notice.

The Council of the Municipality of Debar adopted the Draft-List for new names of streets, squares, settlements and bridges on April 29 this year, observing the principle of voting according to Badinter.

The list no longer includes the names of the streets connected with the former Yugoslavia (JNA, December 22, Edward Kardelj…), but also of the first fighters and participants in the National Liberation War (Vidoe Smilevski-Bato, defenders Zdravko чкоockovski, Tasa Martinovska…). The current names of the streets Ilinden, Goce Delchev, Nikola Karev, the Debar national heroes Ibe Palikukja and Liman Kaba, as well as the first fighters Pavle Dzikovski and Zija Mersoski remain.

Most of the names are of persons and events from the Albanian history and culture and Albanians from Debar.

The three squares will be named Skenderbeg and Illyria, as before, while the third square will be named Elez Isufi (national strategist originally from Peshkopi - Albania). The Rajчиica Bridge crosses the Debar Bridge, while the Melnik Bridge crosses the Radika Bridge. The settlements Venec one (Uraniku), Venec two (Penestija) and the settlement Deplast (Most Selam) will get new names.

An initiative to change the names was first initiated by the Municipal Council in 1996 and then in 2010, but these initiatives were not fully implemented.
