At the end of last year, there were a record 59 million internally displaced people in the world. The latest report released today shows that new waves of violence, conflicts and disasters caused by climate change have forced many people to flee their homes.

According to a report by the Center for Internal Displacement Monitoring (IDMC), a project of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) in Geneva, 5,8 million more displaced people were registered last year than in 2020.

"The situation today is worse than even our record number suggests, as it does not include the nearly eight million people forced to flee the war in Ukraine," said NRC Secretary-General Jan Egeland.

"We need drastic changes in the way world leaders think about how to prevent and resolve conflicts and end human suffering," he said.

Many of the registered displaced people are due to deteriorating conditions in Afghanistan, Yemen and sub-Saharan Africa. The largest displacement is in northern Ethiopia, where 5,1 million people are stranded due to the protracted civil war of 2020.

As many as 80 percent of the world's displaced people are in sub-Saharan Africa, where attacks by armed groups have forced many to flee their homes, while hampering infrastructure development and stability as a solution to displaced people.

Natural disasters and unfavorable climatic conditions caused the displacement of 5,9 million people last year.

There are also a large number of cases where people are forced to change their place of residence several times during a year. For the past 2021, this was the case for as many as 23,7 million people or 60 percent of all displacement cases

Particularly at risk of forced displacement are China, the Philippines and India in densely populated areas affected by hurricanes, torrential rains and floods.
