VIDEO INTERVIEW | "Dirty Theatre" at the "Scream" festival in Skopje: "As long as we can we will play and move forward"
This Saturday, as part of the "Scream" festival in the Boris Trajkovski Arena in Skopje, three legendary musical names of bands that are part of the history of Balkan rock and roll will perform on stage. The Macedonian audience will be able to enjoy the greatest hits of "Dirty Theatre", "Red Apple" and "Galia".
In the morning show "Sloboden Pečet", the two members of the Croatian rock group "Prljavo Kazlishte" were guests: Jasenko Houra, who is also its founder in 1977, and Mladen Bodalec, who joined the band as a vocalist in 1985.
We talked with them about the upcoming concert, their previous visits to Macedonia and their life as musicians, who have been on the rock and roll music scene for more than 45 years.
- We were together with "Crvena Jabuka" a week ago and we meet them quite often. Sometimes we also see each other in the hotels, they are nice guys with whom we continue our conversations usually after the concerts in the wardrobes. We have never played with "Galija" and I don't know if we will meet here in Skopje. I think that according to some protocol each of us should play for an hour and a half and we will try to play the songs that everyone expects and wants. I only now understand the song "Sve ye lako kad si mlad", sometimes the things you say are pure psychoanalysis, so with songs, you write some words that you only later understand what they meant. I have never been able to talk about the music immediately when I write it, but at least a few years had to pass before I could understand what it was about - says Jasenko. - said Jasenko.
Mladen Bodalec served military service in Bitola 40 years ago, and as he says, both privately and as part of the band, he has fond memories of Macedonia.
- 40 years ago, exactly the whole of 1984, I was here in Bitola and of course I have good memories, although it was not so easy. And we cannot know how many times we have been in Macedonia, the band has existed for more than 45 years, so we have probably been in all the halls, in all the places. That's a lot of concerts, but we remember well that we were always well received by the Macedonian audience and that we and our audience had a great time. That is also the reason why people are looking for us here and that we are always welcome and we hope that it will be the same this Saturday, says Mladen.
It's not easy to be part of the scene for so many years and still have songs that were created so many years ago still be relevant. Jasenko says that music is what makes them continue to create and play.
- The corona virus pandemic made us draw a line and think. Then I realized that if we continue without performances I will die. That's not my life. What keeps you going, whatever generation you're from, that's the meaning of your life, if you "extinguish" that, I'm afraid you'll be done very quickly. Music makes us go on, it's the meaning of life, it makes you pay attention to what you eat and how you live. I am very grateful to music for that. Of course, there are also very difficult and exhausting concerts, like this summer at 41 degrees, every day, sometimes nine concerts in a row. It would be frivolous of us not to think about where those borders are that should not be crossed, but while we can, it is better to go further - said Jasenko.
They promised to play all the hits that the audience is eagerly waiting to hear, and Bodalec revealed that despite the fact that he loves all the songs, there are still some that he listens to more than others.
- "Dirty Theatre" has 15 albums, of which I have sung 11, if each one has an average of 10 songs, that's about 110 songs and I couldn't say which one is my favorite. I can only say in general that I have always found myself mostly in those that did not become hits among the audience. These are songs that were always somewhere on the back of the record, such as "Zbogom dame, zbogom prijatelji", "Laku noch tebi Zagrebe", "Dan za danom", songs that are not the regular repertoire. I once made a list, a compilation just for myself of songs that we don't play in the regular repertoire and it's hard to hear them in the media - said Mladen.
