"Nationalism is perceived as a problem in Macedonia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The three countries of the Western Balkans that are multi-ethnic, where nationalism is used as a means of confrontation between political elites when they do not deliver results" said Ilina Mangova, the Regional Councilor for Europe from the International Republican Institute (IRI) in the morning program of "Sloboden Pechat", commenting on their latest survey.

She added that political parties and leaders were identified as the most responsible for causing nationalism in the survey, followed by foreign powers and the media.

"This shows the responsibility of these political actors who play with nationalism when they are weak by themselves to bring results and strong institutions that will serve the citizens. Citizens expect institutions to function, not to be politically abused, but to function by providing services," Mangova said.

She added that the key responsibility of political leaders should be, in parallel with the operation of the European integration process, to manage inter-ethnic relations positively and constructively, so that nationalism does not turn into a problem.
