Mount Erebus is one of the nine active volcanoes on Antarctica and every day it emits approx 80 grams of gold in the air.

Hidden among the glaciers of Antarctica, Mount Erebus, which is the southernmost active volcano on our planet, in a day throws gold crystals worth $6.000. Namely, the eruptions of this volcano are incessant and it emits gas with crystallized gold into the atmosphere, and it is estimated that on a daily basis about 80 grams of gold fall on the earth in the form of golden rain.

Mount Erebus is unusual not only for the precious matter it spews to the ground, but also because it is considered one of the coldest places on the planet, and it is also one of the highest in the world. Satellite images of the volcano have revealed a lava lake on it that has been growing steadily since 1972, when it was first spotted.

Gold prospectors found this precious metal hundreds of kilometers away from Mount Erebus, and researchers in Antarctica found traces of gold ejected from the volcano at a distance of almost a thousand kilometers from the crater.

The name Erebus itself comes from the ancient Greek god of darkness, and researchers often note that it was seen erupting during the arrival of the expedition that actually discovered it in 1841. Erebus is one of three volcanoes that form Ross Island. It was named after the legendary captain James Clark Ross. This explorer made an important exploration of the Antarctic and discovered the Ross Sea, and was on the expedition in the above-mentioned year when the volcanic eruption struck them.

Otherwise, the frozen continent has 138 volcanoes, and according to a 2017 study, only nine of them are active.
