VIDEO | Concerns about neglect of the city: Tree canopies trapped by cables, old wires and ropes

Some years ago, the city and municipal authorities undertook to release all concreted tree trunks during construction works. They started and stopped. Now let them turn their eyes to the canopy and free the branches from the cables and ropes.

The unhygienic, wild landfills and smelly containers have already become a common sight in Skopje. Just like everyday, a big and for the time being seems unsolvable problem is the public city transport in which there is a lack of buses, and those that transport passengers are "groaning" from dilapidation and you never know if they will reach the destination where they started without a breakdown or without they ran out of fuel.

The people of Skopje are tired of the ugly sights around the city, the total carelessness of the city authorities and the absence of the mayor Danela Arsovska in the public, who is still waiting to announce whether she intends to do something for the city to start functioning as normally as possible.

Carelessness is evident at every step. In the period when Skopje is full of tourists, who in groups on a tour almost always start from the city square, the first thing they face are the unfinished buildings from the famous project "Skopje 2014" placed on one side of the square. Not even ten years were enough for these buildings to be completed, nor does anyone know when it will happen.

On the square, guests in the city are greeted by a fountain that drips more than it sprays, dirt and stray dogs, which are domesticated in this space despite the frequent reactions of the citizens.

I feel ashamed when I see a group of tourists in a square. I don't know how the city authorities are not ashamed for once. The tiles are dirty, dogs are lying loose, it stinks from the manholes on Macedonia Street. The facades and buildings remained intact, the pavement over there near Porta Makedonija was broken. No matter where you turn, it's nowhere. So look through the treetops, they are still left or forgotten somewhere, I don't know, New Year's lights, hanging cables, God forbid someone gets hurt. Is this what a capital city should look like? - asks an older resident of Skopje, with whom we spoke in the city center.

And indeed, cables, ropes and various wires hang from the candelabras, poles and trees, which once probably served for something, but now they have no other purpose than to disfigure the city.

The canopies of the tree rows in the central area hide real "miracles" and incredible inventions. So, for example, they serve to transfer cables from the iron poles to the building where they are needed through the branches. Most often they are wrapped around tree branches for so long that they are etched into the trunk and seriously damage them. Remains of knotted rope, knotted steel wires, Christmas decorations and light bulbs are also hidden in the canopy. There is everything except birds, for which the treetops should be a natural environment, but not in the center of Skopje where they are trapped by cables and wires.

In Skopje, the city of concrete and asphalt, every tree, every green space should be kept as a real treasure. Some years ago, the city and municipal authorities undertook to release all concreted tree trunks during construction works. They started and stopped. Now let them turn their eyes to the canopy and free the branches from the cables and ropes. It should at least be a simpler matter, if one cares at all about greenery and the environment.
