Winds easing overnight helped the Greek fire service to control several fires in different parts of the country, although firefighters were still battling the blaze in Phokis and the Peloponnese this morning.

According to the Fire Service, 52 fires broke out on Monday alone caused by the strong wind and high temperatures, the Greek newspaper "Kathimerini" reports.

One of them is the fire at the foot of Mount Parnassus in Phocis, where the fire is still burning through the area below the olive groves and is splitting into several fronts as it makes its way to the sea.

"During the night, the weakening of the winds helped us. "We are concerned about the fire-affected section from Itea to Agia Eftimia," said Deputy Governor Giorgos Delmozos.

He added that increased air support is expected today in further extinguishing the fire.

As announced by the Fire Service, 140 firefighters with 43 vehicles were engaged in extinguishing the fire, and four planes and one helicopter assisted from the air.

Another difficult day is expected, as the risk of forest fires has increased for the fourth day in a row, the National Meteorological Service said.

On Monday afternoon, a fire broke out on Zakynthos, in a forest area in the Kambi area, on the north side of the island, which is being extinguished by 30 firefighters with 12 vehicles, an airplane and two helicopters.

Special vigilance will be needed today as well, as a very high risk of fire is predicted in the regions of Attica, Central Greece, Peloponnese, Western Greece and the North Aegean Sea, Katemerini states.
