VIDEO: Wet wipes, construction debris and food debris more and more often end up in the sewers

Wet wipes, food debris and even construction debris and asphalt debris often end up in the sewer system. This problem in the functioning of the sewerage is caused by unscrupulous citizens and companies, said today in the morning briefing the head of the sewerage sector in the PE Water and Sewerage, Sasha Atanasov.

- The problem must start to be solved by households. Each of us should be aware of the damage it causes with each wet handkerchief thrown in the drain, this is especially noticeable in times of pandemic when their use is increased. It is devastating that even diapers are thrown away, and even construction debris is thrown in the audit shafts, and often the remains of asphalt which after being hardened are very difficult to remove. Fortunately, we have special vehicles with vacuum and pressure, but we often have to manually clean the clogged drains, explains Atanasov.

Similar problems occur when clogging drains. Atanasov says that they regularly follow the weather forecast and in case of announced rain or snow, they regularly clean the gutters so that there are no spills and floods on the streets.

The sewerage in Skopje has a length of 1.100 km, of which 7 percent is fecal sewerage, and 30 percent is atmospheric sewerage. It is assisted in the maintenance of 48.000 revision manholes and about 20.000 gutters with grids that enable the drainage of stormwater from the roads. The head of the sewerage department says that the sewerage network in Skopje is of good quality and can withstand even the new connections from the households that move into the new housing units, only if everyone behaves conscientiously and does not throw various objects in the sewerage.

- We are working intensively on the treatment plant and I think that in 3-4 years we will be able to reach the first phase of the project that can be used. It would be located on the territory of Trubarevo. The two large collectors from Gjorce Petrov to Aerodrom are now collecting wastewater, taking it to a pumping station, and the treatment plant will perform biological-technical and mechanical water purification. There is such a small treatment plant in Volkovo where the water is purified and discharged into the river Lepenec.
