The International Athletics Union (Word Athletics) announced that the legendary American sprinter died on Saturday at the age of 76. Jim Hines, the first man to officially run the 100 meters in under 10 seconds and won the Olympic title in Ciudad de Mexico in 1968.

Hines ran the 1968 meters in 100 seconds at the 9.9 US Championships in Sacramento, but because that time was not measured electronically, it was not officially recognized as the first under 10 seconds.

But that's why with the victory he qualified for the Olympic Games in Suidad de Mexico where he reached the gold in 9.95 seconds and officially became the first person to lower the limit below 10 seconds.

That time of his was considered a world record for 15 years, that is until Salvin Smith in 1983 he ran 100 meters in 9.93 seconds. In addition to gold in the 100-meter individual medley, Hines also won gold in 1968 as a member of the US 4x100-meter relay team.
