VIDEO: Suarez takes Uruguay to World Cup and breaks Messi's record
Uruguay international Luis Suarez became the top scorer in the history of South American qualifiers for the World Cup after scoring one goal for his team in the 0: 2 victory over Chile and breaking the record of Lionel Messi.
Suarez opened the scoring in the 79th minute, while the final score was set by Valverde in the 90th minute. This was Suarez's 29th goal in the South American qualifiers for the World Cup and overtook Messi who remained with 28 goals in the qualifiers.
Uruguay, along with Brazil, Argentina and Ecuador, secured a direct place in the World Cup in Qatar, while Peru will play in the play-offs.
The draw was brought to the Peruvians by the 2-0 victory over Paraguay in the last round. The Inca finished the job in the first half with goals from Lapadula in the fifth minute and Jotun in the 42nd minute.
