Scenes reminiscent of Hollywood movies were filmed in Egypt on Thursday as a sandstorm swept across much of the country, killing one and injuring five.

Videos from both Cairo and the Suez Canal capture the intensity of the phenomenon that created otherworldly images.

In Cairo, the sandstorm caused the collapse of a billboard that fell on four cars in the city center.

In the Suez Canal, two ports were closed "due to bad weather conditions as the sandstorm was accompanied by strong winds and large waves".

As reported by local media, sandstorms are common in Egypt in the spring, causing respiratory problems among citizens.

The last such major sandstorm in 2021 caused the freighter Ever Given to anchor in a diagonal position, causing traffic problems through the channel for about a week.
