VIDEO | Dentist on Humanitarian Mission: Dr. Christian fixes teeth for children with Down Syndrome for free

Dr. Kristijan Ristovski is a dentist from Skopje which for several years fixes teeth for children with Down syndrome for free. This young doctor decided during his studies that he would dedicate himself to working with children who have atypical development. He says he pays special attention to children with autism spectrum disorder, and sometimes spends hours repairing a tooth.

Speaking at his morning briefing today, he gave a positive example to the others, who do not have to dedicate themselves to working with children with special needs, it is enough just not to make their lives difficult, as was the case with the little Ambla from Gostivar.

- There has been a lot of talk lately about the case of little Embla. I heard she was aggressive, so she had to be removed from the classroom. But believe me, children with Down syndrome are not aggressive. I have worked with many people with Down Syndrome in my career so far, and none of them have been aggressive. They, like children with typical development, know how to be stubborn, scared, proud, but not aggressive. I had a classmate with Down Syndrome in elementary school, and I shared a bench with him several times. Later, in college, my mentors and professors noticed that it was very easy for me to work with children with disabilities, after which my mission to help these children in some way began, the Christian story begins.

After opening his own dental practice, Dr. Ristovski decided that he would not charge for the dental services of children with Down Syndrome. In his waiting room very often wait together a row of children with typical and atypical development. He says there has never been a problem or disagreement between the two.

Dental treatment in children with autism begins in the villageo heteroanamnesis, ie research through the parent or guardian to get a complete picture and recognition of the patient's condition. The day we meet we do not wear medical uniforms and turn off strong stimuli in the form of light, music or machines. At the first meeting with a child with autism, I dedicate a few hours and that day I almost do not make an appointment with any other patient. The Hippocratic Oath says that I have to do everything in my power to help people, and I take that seriously. If the three hours of conversation are a condition for the child to leave my office without psychological pain or trauma, I am ready to invest those three hours in it, says Dr. Ristovski.

Only patients who have total indications for general anesthesia are referred to the Dental Clinical Center, all others are treated with local anesthesia, although for many dentists it seems impossible to repair a tooth in a child with autism.
