US police are investigating a massive explosion that demolished a home in a Washington suburb, authorities said yesterday, with footage on social media showing a powerful explosion that reduced the building to rubble.

At the time of the explosion, a suspect at the facility fired a gun "30-40 times from inside his home in the surrounding neighborhood," according to a statement released by Arlington, Virginia police.

Police were dispatched after receiving a report of shots fired and "attempted to make contact with the suspect," the statement said.

But the suspect did not react and remained barricaded in the home, according to the statement.

"While the officers were trying to execute the search warrant, the suspect fired, possibly with a firearm, inside the home. Then, around 20:25, an explosion occurred in the facility.

The investigation into what caused the explosion is "ongoing," the statement said, without mentioning the fate of the suspect. Three police officers reported minor injuries, and the fire was brought under control within two hours.
