VIDEO | Sekulovski from AJM: Journalists won a criminal case against a cyber bully
Again, there is a negative campaign on social networks, but also in reality, and they are mainly aimed at doctors and journalists. A doctor from Ohrid was physically attacked, and Dr. Sofijanova was exposed to attacks on social networks. When cyberbullying spreads attacks on the families of victims, the work becomes much more serious. We talked about this topic in the morning briefing with Dragan Sekulovski from AJM.
- Immediately before the holidays, we received a verdict in favor of AJM in which a person was convicted who wrote an inappropriate comment with discrimination on the AJM fan page. We have several trials, but this is the first example of the court and the prosecution taking the side of journalists. He was convicted of "spreading hatred through computer systems," Sekulovski said.
It is about the convicted Sasho Mitev who addressed with an aggressive and inappropriate vocabulary.
- AJM has received several verdicts, but mainly civil for defamation and insult. This criminal case is very important because the impunity of this type of crime is violated, hate speech, which can then cause physical attacks and attacks on the property of the victims, says Sekulovski.
Different views are welcome, but hate speech is not acceptable in the comments on media fan pages.
- These are works for which there is not enough knowledge in the institutions and that is why we journalists have to help them. When we read the explanation of this verdict, we see that the person was deprived of a computer and a mobile phone, his identity was revealed, and the verdict states that AJM can prosecute the person for compensation of material damage. We will not do that because our point was to show that hate speech is punishable, that it is punishable to publish the names of family members and children on social networks, that it is punishable to speak against a certain ethnicity, etc., says Sekulovski.
In principle, it is more or less the same number of people who commit this violence on social networks. Maybe it's time to make a register of such people. Some of them are employees of institutions that would not tolerate such a relationship.
-Such people use different profiles and different platforms, but this is already about psychopathology. It is a matter of stalking and the prosecutor should have an obligation to prosecute them. "I think there should be a special department in the Prosecutor's Office that will deal with this type of violence," AJM Executive Director Dragan Sekulovski told the Utrinski briefing.
