A Tu-22M3 bomber crashed in Russia's Stavropol region, the Russian Ministry of Defense said, reports the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

"On the territory of Stavropol, after performing a combat mission while returning to the home airport, a Tu-22M3 aircraft of the Russian Air Force crashed. The pilots ejected," the statement said.

A video allegedly showing the plane crash has appeared on social media, but its authenticity has not been confirmed.

Three crew members were evacuated by the search team, while the search for the fourth is still ongoing.

"According to the preliminary data, the cause of the accident is a technical malfunction. There was no ammunition in the plane; fell into an abandoned area. "There is no destruction on the ground," the Russian ministry said.

The governor of the Stavropol region, Vladimir Vladimirov, said that the plane crashed in the Krasnogvardeysky district.
