At least 31 people have died after a fire engulfed a ferry carrying 250 passengers, Philippine authorities said.

It was initially reported that 12 people had died, but later 18 more lifeless bodies were found in the cabins of the burnt ferry.

A large number of passengers jumped off the ferry due to the fire, and were pulled out by members of the coast guard, the navy, another ferry and a local fisherman.

Three children were among the dead, and at least 23 passengers were injured and taken to hospitals.

Philippine authorities said most of the victims drowned, and their bodies were later found at sea.
