About 36.000 people have been evacuated after heavy flooding caused by heavy rains in southeast China's Fujian province, Xinhua news agency reported, citing local authorities.

Large parts of Fujian were destroyed after heavy rains fell since Saturday morning, prompting authorities to issue evacuation orders, the report said.

The heavy rains affected nearly 180.000 people and the floods destroyed 12.350 hectares of crops, causing direct economic losses of about $225 million.

Between Saturday morning and Sunday morning, some hydrological stations on 11 rivers in the province reported water levels up to 3,65 meters above the warning level. Until yesterday morning, water levels at seven stations remained above this limit.

Further heavy rainfall is forecast for several regions, Chinese authorities warned last night.

According to the National Meteorological Center, parts of the southeastern provinces of Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan and Guangdong and the more western provinces of Guizhou, Guangxi, Sichuan and Yunnan are expected to continue to be affected by heavy rain or storms today. Heavy rain is expected, including rainfall of more than 70 millimeters per hour and thunder, the Center informs.

The Ministry of Water Resources and the Meteorological Office have issued an orange warning level – the second highest. The highest red alert has been issued for some areas in southwestern Zhejiang and northern Fujian due to the danger of mountain streams overflowing, and local authorities have been asked to take precautionary measures.
