On the strong earthquake that hit southeastern Turkey, the runway at Hatay Airport was literally cut in half.
An earthquake measuring 7,8 on the Richter scale hit Turkey and Syria last night. Hundreds died and thousands of people were injured in both countries. The number of dead in Turkey is currently 284, and 2.323 people are injured, Vice President Fuat Oktay said at a press conference.

Reuters reports that 70 people died in Kahramanmaras province, where the epicenter of the earthquake is, along with 20 people in Osmaniye, 18 in Sanliurfa, 14 in Diyarbakir and 13 in Adiyaman. In Syria, at least 237 people died and 639 were injured, the Syrian state news agency SANA reported, citing an official representative of the Ministry of Health.
The total death toll in Turkey and Syria is now at least 521.
