Five teenagers aged 16 to 18 were injured in a shooting at a park and recreation center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and one of them is in critical condition, authorities said.

About 500-600 teenagers gathered in Greenbelt to celebrate their senior year, a widespread practice in many American schools.

The teenagers started a "showdown" with water guns when shots rang out.

Traffic police officers who were nearby immediately arrived at the scene, where they helped the injured students, and hundreds of teenagers fled the park, reports ABC News.

– This is a horrible, senseless, tragic act... It is chronic in our society and we must do something to stop it. They were kids who just wanted to have a good time at a local park, said Greenbelt Police Chief Richard Bowers.

He informed that all five victims were transported to local hospitals.

- The police believe that the attacker ran away with a group of high school students and is currently not located, said Bowers.
