In front of the city assembly in Novi Sad, tensions fell - the masked people left, the citizens who participated in the protest withdrew. In the courtyard of the institution, there are fallen facade bricks, metal rods with which the masked persons hit the walls of the building, glass from the broken windows, red paint – this remains to testify to the chaos that happened.

The protest was organized by the citizens who were revolted by the tragedy that took 14 lives at the train station in Novi Sad, but the situation became alarming when masked people tried to break into the building, threw firecrackers, torches, bombs - clashed with the police who used tear gas.

Earlier, the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, said in his address that everyone who participated in the protest will be punished. He gave these demonstrations a political sign, because they took part, as he said, "political dissidents".

As Serbian media reports live from the scene, Vucic has now arrived.

"I don't know if you are listening to me, stop a moment, a great tragedy has befallen our country.

I lit a candle a little while ago at the Novi Sad Railway Station. The state has taken all measures to punish those responsible and we will do so and no one will get away if they have made any mistake.

I want to thank the two wonderful people who looked after our premises. They were not afraid of the pack, they had their hands behind their backs, it was clear that they would not use force.

But that was not enough for them. They trampled our flag and destroyed the City Hall. All that they have been building for centuries in our beautiful city," said Vucic.
