VIDEO | It's never too late: A 104-year-old Indian woman has learned to read and write
Kutiyama, a 104-year-old woman in the southern Indian state of Kerala, has always wanted to go to school. But early marriage and a home-centered life put an end to that dream.
But her dream came true when she finally got the chance to join a government-sponsored literacy program.
At age 104, she learned to read and write - something she wanted to do as a child. Shortly afterwards, she made headlines with 89 out of 100 points on the official literacy test.
I always wanted to study, but I never did because I was doing my homework. My siblings also did not go to school. I was 16 when my parents married me. I worked a lot at home, from pulling grass to feeding cattle. "So I could not go anywhere and I could not go to school," she added. this woman told the BBC.
As she says, she wanted to become a teacher, but that did not happen because she did not go to school.
She started learning to read and write a year ago.
I sat next to my grandchildren as they studied and watched them intently. And then the teacher said he would give me books if I was interested. "I read those books over and over," she said.
"I compared the books with my grandchildren's books, but theirs were in English and I do not know English," she added.
According to her, the exam was not difficult for her and she received 89 points out of a possible 100.
