Footage of the recent eruption of the Kilauea volcano on the Hawaiian archipelago has appeared on social networks.

Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, erupted last Wednesday at 04:44 local time. Images from Kilauea show fissures in the heart of the volcano, with lava pouring out of its crater and forming "fountains". Scientists characterize volcanic activity as "dynamic."

The USGS has issued a warning about the danger of releasing sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere and creating volcanic smog, which is spreading to Kilauea. It can cause respiratory problems in humans and animals and damage crops.

Kilauea's eruption came just months after neighboring Mauna Loa, the world's largest volcano, erupted in late 2022 after a 38-year hiatus.
