A zoo located on the banks of the Dnieper River said 300 of its animals had died after being flooded following the explosion of the Kakhovka Dam, which was detonated by Russian forces.

Kazkova Dibrova Zoo announced the loss on Facebook.

"The park was mined and it was impossible to evacuate the animals," the statement said.

– We tried to save them. Every day, under enemy fire, two workers risked their lives to go to Dibrova to feed the animals, a zoo official said.

- Now Russia has destroyed everything. Our soul is torn by pain, he added.
