VIDEO | Meghan Markle is under fire again: She moved a woman into a wheelchair without her permission

The famous British TV presenter and disability rights activist, Lucy Edwards, sparked a debate on social media after analyzing a video posted on the Duchess of Sussex's official Instagram account.

Namely, the video shows how Megan Markle moves the wheelchair of a woman who was in the middle of a conversation during a photo shoot with the Canadian team during an event at the Invictus Games.

"While she probably had good intentions and didn't want anyone to be left out of the photo, it's crucial to ask permission before touching a mobility aid," Edwards pointed out in her TikTok video, which quickly garnered more than 100.000 views.

After going viral, the video sparked a heated debate on social media. Edwards, who is blind herself, shared her experience.

"I often notice that people, thinking they are helping, interrupt my conversation and try to lead me across the road. This creates confusion and disorientation and actually undermines my independence. Mobility aids represent our freedom and independence. Whether it is a white cane, a guide dog or a wheelchair, they are an extension of our bodies and should not be touched without express permission," Edwards stressed.

Meghan Markle, who is often the target of criticism online, this time sparked a discussion about a broader social problem – insufficient education on how to properly communicate with people with disabilities.

"We don't teach enough about disability in our education system and in the workplace. I can understand that Meghan wanted to include this lady and make her part of the event, but the way she did it left many members of our community in shock," Edwards added.

"We all make mistakes every day. What's important is how we learn from them and make sure they don't happen again," she concluded.

The Duchess's office has yet to comment on the incident, and a lively debate has developed on social media about whether the action was well-intentioned or an invasion of the personal space and autonomy of a person with a disability.

@lucyedwards Did Meghan Markle mean to grab this lady's wheelchair without her permission? Whether she did or didn't this has opened up a very important discussion about autonomy within the disabled community. For years we have said Just Ask Don't Grab. A fantastic. Hashtag started by @GuideDogAvaandAmy but why are we still seeing this happen? Maybe Meghan didn't mean any offense she was most likely coming from a well meaning place not wanting to have anyone left out of the photo but it's so important to ask someone before grabbing. Mobility aids really are an extension of our disabled bodies. If someone is to touch Miss Molly without my permission while we're walking, it could endanger my life and cause us to lose concentration. If someone grabs my cane, I suddenly cannot feel the textures of the floor that I need to know to understand the environment around me. If you touch someone's wheelchair without their permission they may not want to go in the direction you're pushing them in and this is just disrespectful. The amount of times that I have been pulled across the road by a well meaning stranger I can't count on both hands and often people don't necessarily know what they're doing is wrong because we're not taught about disability rights in our education systems or our workplace, but it is wrong. Please understand and remember that we all have the right to live free independent lives. I'm sure so many of us have made this mistake, I haven't personally, but I know I make so many mistakes every day. It's how we learn from our mistakes and make sure they don't happen again.
