VIDEO: Thousands of people protest against violence against women in Turkey
Thousands of women have demonstrated in Turkey to protest against violence against women and the insufficient response of the authorities to increasing cases of femicide, following the double arrest of women in Istanbul. At the rally in Istanbul, chants against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his political party AKP could be heard.
"You are a government that allows the killing of women," said march organizer Gunesh Fadime Ahsahin.
Last week, a 19-year-old violent man killed two girls his age with whom he was obsessed, before taking his own life.
Gjulizar Sezer, mother of one of the murdered girls, said that "the massacre must stop". Her daughter's body was found in June, wrapped in a carpet and thrown into the sea.
Other protests were held in Ankara and Izmir. Similar gatherings are held every day in different cities, mostly on university campuses.
