At least 10 people were killed and three were injured in a supermarket in the American city of Buffalo, New York.

Police say the suspected assailant was taken into custody following the attack, which is being investigated as a "racial hate crime".

Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said eleven of the XNUMX killed were of African-American descent.

"This was pure evil," Erie County Sheriff John Garcia told a news conference. "It was a racially motivated hate crime by someone outside our community.

New York Governor Katie Hochul said: "I sincerely hope that this individual, this white man who has just committed a hate crime against an innocent community, will spend the rest of his days behind bars. "And let heaven help the next world."

Court documents name the suspect as Peyton Gendron, an 18-year-old from Conklin, New York. Hours after the shooting, he was charged with first-degree murder and pleaded not guilty. The massacre was reported on the Internet, and it is being investigated whether he published a manifesto.

He traveled for hours to the scene of the massacre

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said the suspect traveled for hours to Tops Friendly Market on Jefferson Avenue, about five miles north of downtown Buffalo. It is a settlement with a majority black population.

According to available information, the killer had a body armor and was armed with an automatic rifle. He entered the supermarket, and eyewitnesses said they heard dozens of shots.

Witness statements

Brady Kefart and Shane Hill, both 20, told the Associated Press they were standing in the parking lot just as the attacker was trying to leave the scene. They said he was wearing a camouflage suit, a black helmet and something resembling a rifle.

"He was standing there with a gun to his chin. "We did not understand what was happening and why that child had a gun to his face," Kefart said. He said he was seen kneeling and police arrested him.

Like in a horror movie

"I heard gunshots. "Shots, shots and shots," he told local newspapers.

"It sounded like things were falling apart," Will G, a Tops supermarket employee, told Buffalo News.

One of the police officers who was at the scene told reporters: "It's like entering a horror movie, but it's all real. It's like Armageddon. "It's so intense."
