Eight people have been killed and around 25 injured in a train accident in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal.

The accident occurred when a freight train hit a stationary passenger train, Kanchenjunga Express, in New Jalpaiguri district on Monday morning.

Dramatic footage from the scene of the crash shows one carriage of the express train hanging in the air.

It is not yet clear what led to the crash, but authorities say a thorough investigation will be conducted.

Authorities said ambulances and disaster response teams were sent to the scene for rescue efforts.

"We are trying to complete the rescue operation as soon as possible. "The preliminary information we have is that the Kanchenjunga Express was hit from the rear by a freight train," railway official Sabyasachi De told reporters.

A passenger rescued from the Kanchenjunga Express said he sustained a head injury in the accident. "I was traveling in the B1 train when it was hit," he told news agency ANI.

Federal Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnau said relief teams are working in close coordination with railway officials to carry out the rescue operations.

"The injured have been transferred to the hospital. Senior officials have reached the spot," he announced on X.

The railways has set up a control desk with a helpline number at Rangapani station, near which the collision took place.

Last year, a catastrophic accident involving three trains in the eastern state of Odisha killed around 290 people and injured more than 1.000.
