At least nine people have been killed and about 50 injured after a stage collapsed at a pre-election rally in Mexico, local authorities said. The incident occurred while center-left presidential candidate Jorge Alvarez Maynez was giving a speech in the city of San Pedro Garza García. The collapse of the stage was caused by a sudden strong gust of wind, Maynez wrote on X, as reported by the BBC.

Footage has surfaced on social media showing the moment the structure collapsed while several people were on stage. State Governor Samuel Garcia urged local residents to stay home due to severe thunderstorms in the area.

Maynez is the candidate of the Civic Movement party and is currently in third place in the national polls. In a post on X, he said that he himself was not injured, but several members of his team were.
