OSCE is safe, the organization and its functionality are saved, for the people. Malta is the next chairman of the Organization, and the mandate of the Secretary General and the heads of the three institutions within the OSCE has been extended. The Organization's budget has not been passed due to the Russian blockade, which remains a major problem.

These were the key issues that were discussed at the 30th Ministerial Meeting of the OSCE, which was held in Skopje over the past three days, and which were highlighted today at the closing press conference attended by the current Chairman of the OSCE, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bujar Osmani. , the Secretary General of the OSCE, Helga Maria Schmid and the future President of the Organization, Ian Borg.

– This is the biggest political event on our territory and this meeting took place in an extraordinary time, when we are witnessing constant attacks, a war against Ukraine and human suffering. In many ways history repeats itself. The challenges are both today and tomorrow. Here in the Balkans we hesitate to call things historic, but this Ministerial Council has already been called historic. The Russian aggression against Ukraine called into question the European security architecture, but it also called into question the existence of the Organization itself, that's why this council is revolutionary, said Osmani.

Regarding the budget, Osmani announced that another attempt will be made after the ministerial council and he called on Russia to allow a consensus, because without an adopted budget the field missions of the OSCE "suffer", including the one in Macedonia.

– We saved the organization and its functionality, for the people. All members agreed on the election of Malta as the next chairman and on the extension of the mandates of the Secretary General and the three institutions within the Organization, said the current chairman of the OSCE.

He congratulated Malta, expressing his gratitude for undertaking this mission in difficult times, as well as for the dedicated work of the Secretary-General and the High Representatives for National Minorities and Freedom of the Media and the Head of the ODIHR Office, wishing them continued success in their work. .

To a journalist's question whether there was "bargaining" with Russia in reaching the agreements at the Ministerial meeting, Osmani said that compromise is at the core of the Organization and expressed satisfaction that in such a difficult year decisions were made unanimously, while underlining that there was no bargaining with values of the Organization.

- Without being immodest with skillful diplomacy, until a few days ago the consensus was an impossible mission, look at the texts of the news agencies that said that the end of the OSCE is in sight, that there is no chance for the USA and Russia to reach a consensus on one issue - Osmani pointed out.

He added that the underestimation of Macedonia should stop and trust should be restored in the state institutions that today managed to save the most complicated organization from ruin.

The new chairman of the OSCE, Borg, in his address at the final press conference, said that they will focus on ending wars and conflicts and added that the Russian aggression against Ukraine must stop.

Borg emphasized that the unanimity of all 57 countries that have given him confidence as the new chairman is proof, as he said, of our common commitment to continue strengthening the organization and to ensure that despite all the challenges we face, the organization will continue to works.

– As we begin our journey together, we will dedicate ourselves to fulfilling our duties and responsibilities in the time ahead, he said.

Borg expects to work, he said, hand-in-hand with all partners, and said he would commit to working to encourage the strengthening of multilateralism.

OSCE Secretary General Helga Maria Schmid also addressed the final press conference. She pointed out that the decisions that were made by the member states in Skopje will enable the successful continuation of the work of the Organization - enabling stability, security, human rights and the fundamental freedom of people.

- I will do my job as general secretary just like my colleagues from the other three institutions, because this is not for us, but for the people. We are here to convey the purpose of the Organization. OSCE is a successful organization today. It is a challenge in the current conditions to find a common language for each topic, but our Organization has been based on principles and values for almost 50 years, said Schmid.

As he indicated, the goal of the Organization is not only to address current challenges, but to hold all participants accountable. This, emphasizes Shmid, was confirmed by the chairman Bujar Osmani in the past two days.

She added that all 57 member countries have decided to choose Malta as the future chairman, and this will provide the continuity we need to keep the Organization.

- As the Secretary General of the OSCE, I support the decision for the future chairman, added Schmid.

She referred to the motto that was chosen this year - "For the people" and pointed out that it is very appropriate and corresponds to the work carried out by the OSCE.

- Everything we do, whether it is the work in terms of preventing corruption and organized crime, monitoring the elections or increasing security, something that we tirelessly work on and address these problems to the citizens, we also advocate for the security of women journalists, we stand for basic human rights, and all this is for one purpose only, and that is to support people - both men and women, Schmid pointed out.

She emphasized that Malta plays an important role in maintaining peace and security and believes that she will apply the same skills in her leadership as chairman next year.

- I look forward to working with you and your team and you can count on us, said Schmid

Macedonia hosted the 30th Ministerial Council of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe - OSCE, which was attended by about 1000 delegates from 57 member countries of the Organization and partner countries.
