VIDEO | Fascinating: 'French Spider-Man' celebrates his 60th birthday by climbing a skyscraper
Alain Robert, who is known as the "French Spider-Man", celebrated his 60th birthday by climbing a 48-story skyscraper in Paris without any protective equipment, the BBC reported.
"I want to send a message to people that being 60 is nothing. You can still play sports, be active, do fascinating things," he told Reuters news agency.
As reported by the BBC, Robert was arrested after climbing the skyscraper. He has climbed the same skyscraper before, but this time he climbed in a record 60 minutes.
"I promised myself years ago that when I turned 60, I would climb the tower again because 60 symbolizes retirement time in France and I thought it was a good move," he shared.
The purpose of his climb was to raise awareness about global warming.
Robert is known for climbing tall buildings around the world. He began climbing in 1975, training on the crags near his hometown of Valence in southern France.
He began his career as an urban climber at the age of twelve when he forgot his house keys and was left outside the eight-story building where his home was located. As he was impatient to wait for his parents, he simply climbed the wall of the building and entered the house.
Since then, he has climbed more than 150 tall buildings around the world, including the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the tallest building ever built by man, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Sydney Opera House, the Sears Towers in Chicago , the Taipei 101 Tower in Taiwan, the Europe Tower in Vilnius (Lithuania), Jin Mao in Shanghai, the Federal Building in Moscow, etc.
He usually climbs the buildings without first obtaining permission and is therefore often arrested after the climb.
